For most of the history of architecture, interesting facades were achieved through materiality or ornamentation. From the elaborately painted friezes of the Parthenon to the glass exteriors of modern skyscrapers, architecture was primarily static, only ‘changing’ as the environment would change and affect the material of the façade in differing ways, be it rain, light, rust, etc. As technology has progressed and facades have transformed – literally – the role of environment hasn’t diminished. Rather, cutting-edge technology has allowed designers to develop architecture that responds to environmental stimuli in more interesting ways than ever. |

Vectorworks, Inc. announces 20 winning projects of the Vectorworks Design Scholarship, including global architect winner, Tom Hudson-Davies, a graduate student at Aarhus School of Architecture in Denmark. Hudson-Davies competed against 1,600-plus submissions. His project, Caretaker’s House addresses an overlooked part of architecture — maintenance — and puts it at the forefront of his design process. Along with the other winners, he’ll receive financial support to use as he chooses, as well as free Vectorworks educational software and complimentary training for his school. | |

After some years of installation, a façade with HPL panels could start showing a deteriorated appearance due to the presence of dirt. This is not the common case, as usually an HPL façade has the advantage of being cleaned in a natural way, just with the water of the rain and with a proper maintenance. Nevertheless, in some cases, this apparent deterioration can be caused by the existence of dirt traces that have been accumulated due to different reasons. When things like these happen, the façade may not look good anymore. Fortunately, cleaning a façade made with HPL panels, can be really easy to do by using some very basic products. |
