Le Corbusier’s statement, “a house is a machine for living in,” forecasted a future where the house would become an engineered product of standardized, easily-duplicable pieces for an ideal city, while also achieving its ultimate functional purpose: the well-being of its inhabitants. Our editorial theme for the month of March was Home. A theme intrinsically tied to our mission: to provide architects with the knowledge and inspiration to house the 1.5 billion people that will move into our cities in the near future. With this focus on the future of our cities, how will the concept of housing evolve? What lessons can we learn from the housing experiments of the past? How does the home affect one’s quality of life? What elements must be included in social housing to create more democratic cities? In a series of articles on this topic, we dive into these questions and explore the current and future state of housing, developed by our team of curators, in collaboration with our readers. |
